In the spirit of avoiding sugar

I heart Zico.

My heart went pitter patter at the first sight of it in the deli's drink case. Coconut water after all is one of the few sugar-free alternatives to juice or soda when you are eating out, but most places don't carry it. Zico actually one-upped the other coconut waters I've had because they have different yummy flavors. Mango coconut water was definitely a happy, happy find. All natural, 60 calories per drink box, and 100% recyclable packaging. It just occurred to me that while I was excited about this packaging, I did actually throw it away in a trash can after lunch... shoot.

Anyway, it's not widely available but you can buy online.

Never heard of coconut water. Sounds good though! I may have to try!

so interesting. I love coconut flavored anything but always feel guilty eating it b/c it's often so caloric. right? coconut milk and shaved coconut are really fattening, right? This sounds like the perfect alternative — you get the flavor and the health benefits without all the fat. thanks for sharing your discovery!

I saw this at the grocery store today but wasn't sure what to think of it. I guess I'll have to try it!

I wonder if I can get it on the West coast....hmmm...interesting. I admit though other than water, tea and a small glass of coffee each morning, I really dont care to drink anything else. I wonder if my kids would like it...hmmmmm....

Alexandra's Kitchen, while coconut is high in fat it is so so good for you. Coconut oil can be heated at high temps and not go rancid. olive oil or any of the more delicate oils turn rancid at certain respective temps. Rancid oils/fats are toxic in the body.

Unadulterated fat does not make you fat, sugar does. Eat your coconuts!

@ cate – really it was at your grocery store? i'm going to have to petition mine to sell it!

@ amanda – i know, I pretty much only drink water or green tea but every now and then...and my husband really likes having juice or soda so this is a good alternative! thanks for the info on coconut!

I have tried Zico before but found one natural experience to be much fresher tasting...they don't have flavors of coconut water, but they have another acai juice drink that is so amazing and since i've started drinking it, i haven't gotten sick once!

my yoga studio sells it! but even more importantly, a local restaurant actually has fresh coconut water (ie, the coconut itself, with the top lopped off). it's so environmentally unfriendly, but so good. :)

I like Zico the best of the thermal paks, but none compare to water right out of the young Thai coconut. Anyway you drink it, it's fantastic after a hot yoga class.

I love coconut water (though I think it is best straight from the coconut). I will keep an eye out for this brand next time I'm at Whole Foods. In fact, I'll look for it at my favorite health food store near me.

Does anyone (lifeinrecipes?) buy young Thai coconuts? I have looked into it but never wanted to spend so much money. I hear they are fantastic for health. Where do you get them?

The real key to the young Thai coconuts is not just the water...but the meat that is tender and jell-like. Those two components are what make them worth the money you spend on them. I get them at Whole Foods or Mrs. Greens which are big chain health food stores in the East.
You can order them online too :)

yet another reason i am heading back overseas. fresh young coconut costs like 50 cents. :)

i believe i paid $5 or so the last time i was at java green. yummy, but not cheap.

Best coconut water I've had was on the island Pulau Tioman, off the coast of West Malaysia. After a nice swim on the beach, you get to enjoy a lunch prepared by the locals and freshly harvested young coconuts, hacked open on the spot with a machete. Now that's flavor.

Now that I'm on the other side of the Pacific, I wouldn't mind settling for a Zico, just so I don't lose my fingers to my butter knife on a store-bought unhusked coconut.

Hi Michelle,
Thanks so much for your comment on my blog, and for visiting! I've also suffered the "beet red" fingers for days. . .!

So glad you left a comment and led me here. Your blog is fabulous! And I'm thrilled to read about this coconut water, too (though I doubt we'll have it in Toronto just yet)--I've tried "plain" coconut water and really didn't like it at all, but I think the flavors would be delicious. :)

I make a trek to an Asian market where they are about the same price a a box of Zico with 2-3 times the amount of water inside.

I also love ZICO!!

I remember being in Costa Rica a few years ago and was asked what I desired for breakfast. I pointed to a coconut high on a tree. Someone then proceeded to climb the tree and bring me the coconut with the top off (thanks to his machete), along with a spoon and a straw. The best breakfast EVER!
