Close Your Eyes and Think Cheese
You know that processed dairy stuff in the green canister that you shake willy-nilly on everything from pizza to soup to omelettes? Now the vegan in you can shine with a substitute condiment known as Nutritional Yeast. Wait – don't ick out on me yet. This stuff can be found in the bulk section at Whole Foods and it has a sort of cheesy, savory flavor that tastes WAY better than the name sounds. The best part is that it acts as a nutritional supplement for those of us needing extra B vitamins.
Look for your yummy Nutritional Yeast to be fortified with B12 in particular if you aren't eating meat. Found naturally in soil and ingested with garden-grown veggies, we lose B12 when our produce is washed to sterile perfection. If you don't eat the cow that ate the dirt, then you too could use extra B12 help. Enjoy!

Yeah, this stuff is pretty good! Michelle had me put it on some eggs yesterday for breakfast. Not bad. Needs a better name, for sure. Like Yeese, or Cheast. Hmm, maybe not.
That sounds interesting, but looks a little like fish flakes lol. I think that i will give it a try some day.
this is very exciting. i take it you got to the B12 part of the china study? so interesting that B12 is the only thing we can't really get in a meat free diet - having nothing to do with plant deficiency, but rather soil deficiency. if our soil was allowed to be its natural richness, the plants would have the B12 we need. FASCINATING :)
I was skeptical when I read this post the other day (found your blog by chance, went through it--hi!) but today, in the midst of raiding the bulk department of the local WFs, (so inexpensive...it's like a dream) I happened upon the stuff and decided to give it a try. It's actually really good. I was surprised, but definitely happily. Thanks for the recommendation.
Three cheers for nooch! It deserves many many more blog posts dedicated to it!
I have had a love affair with nutritional yeast for many years now. My favorite way to eat it is as a topping on popcorn (drizzle a bit of olive oil to make sure it adheres to the popcorn). YUM.
